Know when you are there: measuring product-market fit
Three stages, and how long they take
Idea to problem-solution fit: usually 3 to 6 months, one or two 90-day cycles. Problem-solution fit to product-market fit: 12 to 18 months. Then scale. Discovery does not stop at any of these. It changes shape. At the start it is interviews and smoke tests. Later it is analytics, experiments and the 3W Loop on live numbers.
Measuring product-market fit
Ask your users one question: how would you feel if you could no longer use the product? Very disappointed, somewhat disappointed, not disappointed. The benchmark is 40% very disappointed. Below it, read the open-ended answers, find out who the very disappointed users are, and iterate for them, not for everyone.
Send it once you have users who have experienced the value, not on day one. Segment the answers by your beachhead. A 40% overall with 70% in the beachhead and 10% outside is a clear instruction: stay in the beachhead.
Run in 90-day cycles
Each cycle: pick the riskiest assumption, write the test card, run it, write the learning card, update the map. Then the next one. The learning card's decision line is the next cycle's starting point. Founders who do this in cycles reach fit. Founders who do it once reach a pivot they did not plan.
What comes next
Value delivered is half the loop. The Business Modeling course covers the other half: choosing a business model, setting an initial price against your quantified value proposition, lifetime value, cost of customer acquisition, and the ratio investors actually look at. Do not start it before your MVBP has taken money. Pricing a product nobody has paid for is the fun-with-spreadsheets trap again.
A survey that told UX Pilot who to build for
At UX Pilot, a bootstrapped AI design tool with over a million users, the product-market fit survey was less useful as one number than as a segmentation. The very disappointed users clustered around a particular workflow. That cluster is where the free-to-paid experiments from Module 6 were aimed, and where the 44.67% lift came from. The survey did not say build more. It said build for these.
Survey and cycle plan
Set up the survey now so it is ready when the first users have felt the value. Then plan the next 90 days.
Tick only what is true. Nobody is grading this. The next module assumes it.
